what a whirlwind of emotions
i began toying with a new idea, not new to the world - smitty assures me this is impossible although i hope otherwise - but new to me. i started thinking about thinking, about pieces that made you think. i have done this in the past, with my bird island and water bottle diver, and even last year. however, i want to go deeper. i want to make art you have to see, not just look at. i've talked with friends about wanting to see something "raw," wanting to feel. this intrinsic need for emotion is, i believe, the most important and driving factor in all life. on the topic of this deeper connection, i was reminded of a reading from William Faulkner, talking on the subject of writers who have lost their "heart," which i will leave as a parting gift.

"... He labors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, of defeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories without hope and, worst of all, without pity or compassion. His griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands."
